Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of the Orchestra, the most formidable project to date from Grammy Award-winning composer, DJ, and curator MASON BATES, positions the modern orchestra as the best synthesis of art and know-how. Co-commissioned by 6 of America’s prime orchestras – Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the American Youth Symphony – it is a 23-minute concerto accompanied by a film that combines dwell-motion and animation.
Today, Sony Classical is happy to announce the launch of the standalone soundtrack, recorded specifically by the CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, done by Edwin Outwater. Hear listed here.
The magical intersection among music and technologies has usually been a central tenet of composer Mason Bates’ career, and Philharmonia Fantastique: The Creating of the Orchestra is no exception. The daring challenge was designed to hook up new music, musicians, and audiences, and to discover the fundamental connections in between audio, sound, effectiveness, creativeness and technological know-how.
The concerto portrays the 4 family members of the orchestra as distinct “family members,” each and every with their very own unique audio worlds and musical motifs: the slinky, sophisticated noir-jazz of the woodwinds the lush romanticism of the strings the intense techno-fanfares of the brass and the percussion area “drum circle” in all its flexibility. Ultimately the work’s information is just one of unity: the diverse devices of the orchestra are most impressive when working with each other as just one giant instrument.
“I desired the four people of the orchestra to be really differentiated so that we could produce extraordinary pressure in the next portion of the piece, in which the families are not able to really unify,” explains Bates. “The way they last but not least come collectively is to learn to enjoy each individual other’s themes. That aspect of coming jointly and transcending their discrepancies turned a key inspiration for us as the piece unfolded.”
Just about each and every factor of the concerto mirrors the central thesis that the orchestra is the ideal relationship of custom and innovation. The title alone is a nod to Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (a hanging spectacular storm with innovations in orchestration), but the songs of Philharmonia Fantastique ventures past the bounds of classical to bring in elements of jazz and techno.
In the end, it is really an exploration of human relationship, and the bonds that artwork and creativity can forge across language and race. The orchestra is, states Bates, “a tremendous instrument. As it delivers its marvels of engineering together into a single pitch, we are witnessing both equally artwork and science. The exact orchestra that explores our psychological depths is also our greatest example of interactive technology.” The orchestra is also, he states, quite basically “1 of the greatest human creations”, and Philharmonia Fantastique: The Generating of the Orchestra is a fitting celebration.
