North completes program history with Evansville City track & field meet titles

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – When the team results were announced, North’s Katie Pogue shed tears of happiness.

Hallie Fecteau had a confident feeling her team was going to get at first or second place in the meet. Andrew Hess was super happy for his team, knowing that a title was something that the Huskies had been training for since the beginning of the year.

Pogue, Fecteau and Hess are all seniors on North’s track and field teams, and all three seniors contributed greatly in the Huskies completing the Evansville City Meet sweep for the first time in school history.

“Everyone did really good,” Fecteau said of the victory. “I was so excited for everyone. It was kind of like a bittersweet ending. It’s our last City Meet for a lot of us who had been going through it for four years.”

Fecteau took home another City title in pole vault, and Pogue had a title in high jump, as well as a third place finish in long jump (which she won the title last year) and second place finishes as part of the Huskies’ 4×100 and 4×400 meter relay teams.

Despite all the individual accomplishments, Pogue said that there were events that she could have been better in.

“My best (in high jump) this season is 5-02; I think I could have gotten that,” Pogue said. “But I barely missed it. I also could have done better in (long jump).”

In the previous year’s City Meet, North’s girls were 15.5 points behind of eventual champion Memorial. Jacqueline Brasseale’s wins in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs were big factor in the Tiger girls getting the victory.

Memorial’s Jacqueline Brasseale leads in the girls 1600 meter runs during the City Track and Field meet at Central High School Friday evening, April 22, 2022.

Brasseale again took home titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs this year, but now the results for the North and Memorial girls have almost completely flip-flopped. The Huskies ended the evening by holding a 16.5 point advantage against the Tigers.

“We just kind of picked away at each event,” North girls coach Wes Camp said. “We didn’t have a lot of frontrunners, per se. We scored in every single event and just kind of chipped away at it. It was a whole team effort.”

Camp looked to Pogue and Fecteau for setting the tone for the rest of the evening. First place finishes for them were crucial in order for the Huskies to have a chance.

“They always kind of pull through for us when we need them,” Camp said.

Alexia Smith of Bosse was a triple winner in the 200, 400 and long jump. Madison Farmer of Harrison took home titles in the shot put and discus.

On the boys side, coach Lonnie Wilson had a good feeling things were just about wrapped up for his team with two events left.

The North boys finished within the top-five in all 16 of the City Meet events and had first or second place finishes in nine. The Huskies were once again champions in the 4×800 meter relay race.

Wilson credits having frontrunners and depth on the team for their win.

“We had four events where three kids scored (in) each (event), so that helped a lot,” Wilson said.

The North boys and girls teams have now won four City titles apiece for their programs. The titles not only serve as a momentum booster going into the postseason but great accomplishments in general for both programs.

“It’s a big deal,” Wilson said. “I hope it keeps our program going. I know that we both have big numbers, so we just hope to keep it going in the right direction.”

Alex Hooten of Central was a triple winner in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter events on the boys’ side. Domonic Brown of Harrison swept the hurdle titles.
